但凡是看过美剧的同学，对 episode 这个单词多少是熟悉的，即表示一部电视剧中的“一集”，比如第三季第七集就是“Season3 Episode 7”，简称“S03E07”。具体来说，episode 源自法语 épisode 或直接源自希腊语epeisodion（增添物）。话说古希腊悲剧源自献给酒神的颂歌，原以歌唱为主，但后来逐渐添加表演、对白等内容。由于这些在歌唱之间插入的内容是后来增添的，所以在希腊语中就用epeisodion表示。而 episode 于17世纪70年代进入英语后也是用来表示希腊悲剧中“两段合唱之间的部分”，相当于后来戏剧中的一幕。从这个概念出发，到了18世纪70年代后， episode 开始衍生指若干或一连串事件中的“一个事件、一组事件”以及人生中的“一段经历”，这一事件或经历通常作为一连串事件或时期中的一部分而存在，因其重要、有趣或不寻常而单独考虑，
