Nostalgia 是一个由学者 Johannes Hofer 于1688年在瑞士巴塞尔大学的一篇论文中创造（coin）的一个拉丁医学术语，由希腊语nostos（返家）+algos（痛苦、悲伤、苦恼）构造而来，用来表达（render）德语中的heimweh（思乡病）。该词最早于1756年进入英语，相应也是用来表示“思乡病、怀乡病”。不过这个含义现在较少使用，而是多用单词 homesickness 表示。等到了1920年， nostalgia 从这个概念出发，开始发展出现在的主要含义指“怀旧、念旧”，侧重指一种伤感地渴望或徒然神往过去某个快乐时光或地方的深情，往往在轻微的悲伤中夹杂着快乐
