Slake 是一个与熟词 snake （蛇；蛇行、曲折前行、蜿蜒伸展）十分形似的单词，只差第二个字母不同。该词与英语单词 slack （不紧的、松弛的）同源，都是源自古英语slæc（松弛的, 同lax），其古义相应是指“减轻、缓和”疼痛等。但到了14世纪初期后， slake 从使口渴、饥饿、欲望、愤怒等减轻缓和这个概念出发， 开始发展出现在的主要含义指“解（渴）、止（渴）”以及“满足、消解、平息”欲望、愤怒、好奇、激情等，多用在书面表达或文学领域表示满足口渴或想要某物的感觉，
