Stringent 是一个与小站（微信公众号：田间小站）之前推送过的strident较为形似的单词。同时，该词与熟词 strain （压力、重负；尽力拉）和 strict （严格的）同源也同词根 strain, strict, string （拉紧），都是源自拉丁语stringere（压紧、缩紧、绑紧、拉紧）。其中， stringent 于17世纪经stringere的现在分词stringentem进入英语，原指味道“涩的”，同 astringent 。不过到了1846年后开始转为表示今义指法律、规则、规章、程序、要求、条件等“严格的、严厉的、严苛的”，多指严格到不允许有任何的松动、松懈或选择的自由，通常相对于执行过程中的质量而言更强调最终的效果，且往往意味着限制、控制甚至是强制，
