Seethe 是一个与小站（微信公众号：田间小站）上周推送的soothe较为形似又含义相对的单词。该词源自古英语seoþan（煮沸，喻指“心烦意乱、忧思”），其本义是作正式用语表示“翻滚、翻腾、冒泡、涌动”，多指液体因煮沸而起泡，以及海浪、水花等像水煮沸那般迅速猛烈地移动，

比如：

The waves seethed around the rocks. They were too turbulent for us to be able to take the boat out.浪在岩石周围翻腾，太汹涌了，我们无法驾船出海。

不过现在更多的是用其比喻义，既可以用来形容大量的人或物在狭小的空间内“密集、云集、充满、遍布”，进行快速或繁忙地移动，常用搭配seethe with sth作正式用语使用，

比如：

The forest below her seethed and teemed with life.她下面的森林里处处生机勃勃。

The man destitute of experience dodged amongst the seething crowds of men.那个毫无经验的人在川流不息的人群中东躲西闪。

也可以用来形容人“强压怒火、生闷气、憋气”，即内心充满强烈但无法表达的怒火，常用搭配seethe with sth或seethe at sth，

比如：

She grinned derisively while I seethed with rage.我怒火中烧，她却嘲弄地咧着嘴笑。

The hefty man was evicted from the bar for drunken and disorderly behaviour. Then he seethed silently in the corner.那个身材高大的男人因为醉酒及暴力滋事被赶出酒馆。随后他在角落里默默地生闷气。
