Taboo 也作 tabu ，是一个源自汤加语（Tongan）的单词。话说英国著名航海家詹姆斯·库克船长（Captain James Cook）于18世纪70年代到达南太平洋的汤加群岛后，他发现岛上习俗奇特，禁忌甚多，诸如某些东西不许随便使用、某些地方和人不可随便接近、某些名字和词语绝对需要避讳。这种禁止与圣物或不洁物相接否则将招致超自然力惩罚的观念或其实践被岛上居民称为 tabu ，由此英语中便开始用 tabu 以及后来更常用的 taboo 表示宗教、社会、文化、习俗等方面的“禁忌、忌讳、避讳、戒律”，常用搭配 taboo against/on sth ，
