Inexorable 一词源自拉丁语exorare（说服、劝说），16世纪中期经法语inexorable（毫不容情的、无情的、很难打动的；严酷的、严厉的；不可避免的、无法逃避的）或者直接由拉丁语inexorabilis（不被恳求所打动的，不屈的）进入英语后，也是用来表示行进、潮流、决定、法律及其执行等“不可阻挡的、无法改变的、 不容变更的”，常意味着无情和毫无疑问的终结，也常用于形容必然存在、无法避免或无法回避的事物，

比如：

无可变更的命运

an inexorable fate

不可阻挡的趋势

an inexorable trend

用来指人时， inexorable 则相应表示“不为恳求所动的、无动于衷的、毫不宽容的、冷漠无情的”，强调充耳不闻以及无法被说服，比如：冷漠的对手

an inexorable opponent

无情的债主

an inexorable creditor

一批无动于衷的官僚

an inexorable bureaucracy
