Coerce 一词源自拉丁语coercere（控制、约束），15世纪中期经古法语cohercier进入英语后，原指“用法律或权威的力量约束或限制”。不过该词在15世纪末期后不再流行且无相关文字记录，直到17世纪中期之后才又重新开始使用。这可能是逆构自名词 coercion （强迫、胁迫）而来，用来表示“强制、胁迫、迫使”，常用搭配 coerce sb into (doing) sth 作正式用语使用，主要指通过实际使用或威胁使用暴力来强迫某人做本不愿意做的事，
比如：
