Immense 是一个与immerse（使浸没于；使深陷于、沉浸在）非常形似且容易混淆的单词。该词源自拉丁语immensus（不可估量的、无止境的），15世纪初期经古法语immense进入英语后即用来表示“极大的、巨大的、广大的”或者说“无限的、无边的”，侧重指事物的规模、程度、尺寸等远远超过一般的度量或者说惯常的概念，
