Transient 一词源自拉丁语transire（穿过、越过、通过、赶快过去、消失），16世纪末进入英语后即用来表示“短暂的、转瞬即逝的、倏忽的、无常的”，与同词源的近义词 transitory 常可以互换使用，但 transient 侧重指持续或停留的时间很短这个事实，而 transitory 更为强调性质或本质注定要改变、转变或迟早要结束，

比如：

A whisky miniature has only a transient warming effect.一小瓶威士忌只能使人暖和一会儿。

Most teenage romances are transitory and are doomed from the start.十几岁青少年的恋情大多数都转瞬即逝，从一开始就注定要破裂。

A transient work machinist dismantled the machine to see where the problem is.等到了17世纪80年代后， transient 开始进一步引申指“临时的、路过的、暂住的”，即在一个地方停留或工作很短时间，比如：一个临时机械师拆开机器，看问题出在哪。

The crux of the matter is that the city has a large transient population.问题的症结在于这个城市有大量的暂住人口。

从这个概念用作名词时， transient 则相应表示“暂住某地的人、过往旅客、临时工、流浪者”，以及在生物学中指“过境鸟（飞行过境暂留驻足后继续飞往别处的候鸟）”。
