从词源上来看, intrinsic 一词源自拉丁语intrinsecus(内在地、在内心地),先后经中古拉丁语intrinsecus(内心的、内部的)和古法语intrinsèque(内心的、里面的)最早于15世纪末进入英语,也是用来表示“内部的、体内的”,不过这一含义现在仅用在解剖学领域中,尤指肌肉完全包含在它所作用的器官内。从这个概念出发,等到了17世纪40年代后, intrinsic 开始发展出现在的主要含义指“固有的、本质的、本身的、内在的”,侧重指属于某个事物本身的极其重要或基本的性质、特征或属性的,并与所有影响该事物的可用性、重要性、价值等的外部关系、联系或条件分开考虑
